Rowlett weather risks: tornadoes, wind, and flooding

NOAA's NCEI Storm Events Database files most Rowlett reports under "Rowlett," with some under nearby reference points. Our data covers Dallas County only, so the reports below are from the Dallas County side of the city:

  • December 26, 2015: the EF4 Garland and Rowlett tornado tracked a little over 13 miles, nearly ten of them in Dallas County, crossing I-30 at the President George Bush Turnpike. NOAA reports it affected nearly 600 homes in the county and destroyed nearly 400.
  • October 20, 2019: an EF1 tornado began along Larkin Ln. and caused its worst damage on the 4600 block of Hilcox Rd. near the PGBT, where one home lost most of its roof and the garage walls collapsed.
  • March 13, 2019: about 20 homes were damaged on and around Coral Way by thunderstorm winds, with roof, fence, and tree damage; one home lost a section of roof and its chimney.

Common Rowlett claims

Tornado and wind damage

Tornado claims often involve the roof, framing, windows, garage doors, siding, fences, outbuildings, and contents, plus additional living expenses when a home is unlivable. Straight-line winds can do similar damage on a smaller scale. Early, thorough documentation is essential. See tornado damage claims and wind damage claims.

Hail on suburban roofs

Brick homes with composition shingle roofs are common here. Hail bruises shingles and dents gutters, vents, and metal trim, and insurers sometimes approve only part of the roof. Our hail damage claims page covers what to photograph.

Flooding and water damage

Heavy rain can flood streets near Rowlett Creek and low-lying areas. Rising surface water is flood, which standard homeowners policies generally exclude; NFIP or private flood policies cover it. Water entering through storm damage or a plumbing failure may be covered under your homeowners policy. See flood damage claims and water damage claims.

Permits in Rowlett

The City of Rowlett has its own building inspection and permit office, separate from the City of Dallas, and its requirements apply in both counties. Confirm permit requirements before roofing or structural work begins. If code requirements raise the cost of a covered repair, those costs are generally paid only under ordinance or law coverage, up to its limit. Our building codes guide explains more.

After a Rowlett storm: protect the claim

Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, such as tarping the roof and boarding windows, and keep receipts. Photograph everything before cleanup or tree removal. Report the claim promptly and keep a log of every call, email, and inspection. Check your declarations page for a separate wind/hail deductible. If you must leave the home, track added living costs, since many policies include additional living expense coverage. Our claim documentation checklist covers the details.

How we help

As a Dallas Public Adjuster, we inspect the full property, document damage with photos, measurements, and Matterport 3D imaging where useful, and prepare a detailed Xactimate estimate. We compare it with the insurer's, handle communication with the carrier, and help with supplements, underpaid claims, or appraisal when there is a dispute over the amount of loss. We cannot guarantee any outcome; coverage depends on your policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Part of Rowlett is in Rockwall County. Does your storm data include it?

Our storm history covers Dallas County, which includes the Dallas County part of Rowlett. Storms that affected only the Rockwall County part of the city may not appear in our data, so check the NOAA Storm Events Database for Rockwall County reports as well.

My home was rebuilt after a tornado. Can the insurer treat the new roof as older?

Depreciation should reflect the actual age and condition of the damaged items. Keep permits, invoices, and completion records from any rebuild or roof replacement, because they help establish the age of your roof and finishes on a later claim.

Do I need a City of Rowlett permit to repair storm damage?

Rowlett has its own building inspection and permit office, and roofing and structural repairs often require a permit. Confirm requirements with the City of Rowlett before work begins.

Is my boat dock or lakeside structure covered?

It depends on your policy. Docks, boathouses, and similar structures may be treated as other structures, excluded, or limited, and water-related damage may fall under flood exclusions. Read the other-structures and exclusions sections of your policy carefully.

What are your fees?

Fees are disclosed in a written contract before any work begins; Texas law caps public adjuster compensation at 10% of the insurance settlement. You have 72 hours after signing to rescind.
